Staff Tea Parties - 1940, 1941 and 1943

Perhaps as a wartime substitute for the Annual Staff Dinners,

the Bank's photographic records show more modest tea parties were held from 1940

January 1940:

The table in the centre foreground of the photograph has Eric Hannan (who eventually became the
Safe Deposit Custodian) sitting in the centre of the three gentlemen

February 1941:

The Lord Mayor (Wilfrid Martineau) presents the Associateship Certificate of the Institute of Bankers to D R Phelps.

Donald Phelps left the Bank's employment on September 19th 1947, after 18 years service, to take up the position of Accountant at the Women's Hospital.

Unusually, J P Hilton (on the right of the photograph) does not appear to be wearing a wing collar

January 21st 1943:

This photograph was originally captioned as the 'Annual Staff Gathering' and shows the Lady Mayoress presenting a cheque

January 1943:

These two photographs seem to have been taken at the same event as the 'Gathering' above, although they were simply captioned 'Staff Tea Party'.

The Honours Board in the background was mainly used to list the names of female staff who had passed Part I of the examinations of
the Institute of Bankers. The Board was removed in 1951 - see
