General Purposes Sub-Committee: June 18th 1934

 

Erection of Branch Premises at Site in Bristol Road South, Longbridge.

 

Your Sub-Committee have considered the question of erecting suitable premises on the land recently acquired in Bristol Road South, Longbridge, the proposed building to take the place of the present temporary evening branch conducted in the wood building opposite the works of the Austin Motor Company. It was decided that competitive designs should be obtained from four Architects for the erection of this building with dwelling accommodation, at a cost not exceeding £2,500, exclusive of bank counters and office furniture; and they recommend that this action be confirmed.

5167   The following Minutes of the City Council passed on presentation of the report of the Bank Committee on June 5th, 1934, were received:

 

It was moved by Mr Alderman Gelling, seconded, and Resolved:

 

31603. That the proposal to purchase approximately 500 square yards of land, Bristol Road South, Longbridge, as set out in the foregoing report, at a price of £375, be approved, and that the Committee be, and are hereby, authorised to accept a tender for the erection of branch bank premises, the cost of the land and building being defrayed out of the funds of the Bank.

 

5180  RESOLVED:- That Mr A L Horsburgh be invited to prepare a scheme for the erection of branch bank premises with dwelling accommodation on the site at Bristol Road South, Longbridge, at a cost not exceeding £2,500; the estimate to be exclusive of counters and office furniture; also that the General Manager be instructed to submit the scheme to the General Purposes Sub-Committee in due course.

 

Report of the Town Clerk: August 17th 1934

 

I have to report that I have completed the purchase from Mr Josiah Edmunds Taylor of land at Bristol Road South for the sum of £375.

5231   With reference to the proposed new building at Longbridge, the Chairman of the General Purposes Sub-Committee reported that tenders for this contract had been received and opened in the presence of the Chairman and himself that morning; particulars of the tenders in question being as follows:

 

 

The lowest tender received for the building at Longbridge was that of Mr J Emlyn Williams at the sum of £2,424 and it was recommended that this tender be accepted.

 

5232   RESOLVED:- That the tender of Mr J Emlyn Williams at the sum of £2,424 be accepted for the construction of premises on the site at Bristol Road, Longbridge.

 

Bank Committee: December 17th 1934

 

On Minute No 5232 (Building of premises in Bristol Road, Longbridge) the Committee were informed that the Architect for this contract (Mr Horsburgh) died on Saturday, the 15th instant. The question of securing another Architect to supervise the work was considered and it was:

 

5281   RESOLVED:- That the Town Clerk and the General Manager be authorised to confer with the President of the Birmingham and District Architectural Association as to the proper course to be followed in this matter, and that they be empowered, in conjunction with the Chairman, to appoint an architect to carry through the work to the plans and specification of the late Mr Horsburgh.

 

S742, S745, S749 & S755/6: Bank Committee: January 21st 1935

 

On Minute No 5232, the Town Clerk submitted the following report as to the completion of the contract with Mr J Emlyn Williams for the erection of a branch bank at Longbridge:

 

Architect for Building at Longbridge.

 

In accordance with the instructions contained in Minute No 5281 of your Committee, the Town Clerk and General Manager interviewed the President of the Birmingham Architectural Association as to the position arising from the death of Mr Horsburgh, the Architect for the new premises to be erected at Longbridge. The President of the Association intimated that it was the usual practice for 4% of the fees to be paid to the estate of the deceased Architect, and that the Architect taking over the work should be paid 2% plus an honorarium or commission for supervising the work. In the case of Longbridge branch he thought such honorarium should be £50, and upon being invited to nominate a suitable Architect to take over this work he suggested the name of Mr J B Surman, who was accordingly approached and agreed to take over the work. The necessary papers and particulars in connection therewith had been transmitted to Mr Surman by the Solicitors acting for the estate of the late Mr Horsburgh.

 

Your Sub-Committee  recommend that the action taken by the Town Clerk and General Manager in this matter be approved and the arrangements indicated confirmed.

 

5310   RESOLVED:- That Minute No 5232 be discharged.

 

5324   RESOLVED:- That the arrangements referred to in the foregoing Report with regard to the Architect for the erection of the premises at Longbridge be approved, and that the appointment of Mr J B Surman to supervise the carrying out of the work be confirmed; also that Minute No 5281 be discharged.

 

Bank Committee: May 27th 1935

 

The General Manager reported that an application had been received for the tenancy of the flat at the new premises for the Longbridge Branch by Mr W T Jones, of 164, Balsall Heath Road.

 

5449   RESOLVED:- That arrangements be made for the letting of the Longbridge Branch flat to Mr W T Jones for a period of twelve months certain, and thereafter quarterly, at a rental of £35, the tenant to be responsible for rates and internal repairs; also that the Town Clerk be instructed to prepare any necessary document.

 

Finance & General Purposes Sub-Committee: May 27th 1935

 

Electric Light Installation at Longbridge and Brookvale.

 

Your Sub-Committee have considered tenders for this work, the lowest in each case being that of Messrs J H Payne & Co at £55 . 10. 0. for the Longbridge Branch and £63 . 4 . 0. for the Brookvale Branch. These tenders have, accordingly, been accepted.

 

Finance & General Purposes Sub-Committee: June 24th 1935

 

New premises at Longbridge and Brookvale.

 

Instructions have been given for the new branch premises in Bristol Road, Longbridge to be named the "Longbridge" Branch, to take the place of the existing Rednal and Rubery Branch.
