Before the next issue of "Contact" the cricket season for 1960 will be well under way, with two prominent members of the team for the past few seasons absent, namely Messrs Alsop and Rogers who have left the Bank Staff.

 

Keeping a careful eye on the number of "In's", any new members of the Staff who have played cricket are assured of a warm welcome to the Club. Anyone wishing to join should contact any member of the Club and attend the Annual General Meeting, the date of which is to be announced later.

CONTACT: Summer 1960

 

An unusually good start for the Cricket Club has been achieved this year with the first four matches having been won and hopes running high for a successful season.

 

In the opening matches the batting has been stable with everyone scoring a number of runs. The brunt of the bowling however has been borne by Messrs A Young and M Eley who have performed exceptionally well, with support from keen fielding. Two new members have been welcomed to the Club, Messrs Bourke and Coton who, by their performances, will prove notable assets to the team.

 

The last two matches have been won by two runs and three runs respectively in the last over of the game. Surely results like these will encourage extra support from the Staff.

CONTACT: Autumn 1960

 

Another successful year for the Cricket Club finishing runners-up to MEB Engineers who were champions for the third year in succession. The last match of the season, in which the Bank defeated MEB Accounts by 19 runs assured us of this position.

 

The batting honours go to Mr Bellmore who scored 83 runs for an average of 28.0 and Mr Eley with 212 runs for an average of 23.0. Once again the brunt of the bowling was borne by Messrs Eley, Bellmore and Young with averages of 8.2 r.p.w. (40-329), 9.5 r.p.w. (17-165) and 11.2 r.p.w.  (21-236), but who were outshone in one match by Mr Bignell with a personal best of 6 wickets for 31 runs; before this feat he was said to bowl 'slow optimistic'. The fielding this year was below standard and the feeling is that with a return to the standard set by the team of a few years ago, championship honours would not have been just a hope.

 

A welcome return to the team was made by Messrs Bellmore and Haslam, at the start of the season we were a little depleted with the loss of two members from the 1959 side.

 

This season was the last with Mr Parsonage as Chairman of the Club. I am sorry that we were unable to win the League for him, but we did the next best thing. Once again, on behalf of all members of the Club, I wish Mr Parsonage a long and happy retirement, and extend a cordial invitation to him to attend as regularly as possible in future at Queens Road, Yardley.
