The 5th Annual General Meeting of the Table Tennis Section was held on Wednesday, 15th March 1978 in Head Office with the kind permission of the General Manager.

The following officers were elected to serve for the 1978/79 season:

On behalf of the Table Tennis Section, I would like to thank John Hall who this year retired as secretary of the section, for all his past services to the section.

The Bank has two teams entered in Division 6 of the Birmingham & District League. The ‘A’ team still have a chance of finishing as runners-up to Camp Hill S.D.A., who have this season shown that they are a class above the standard of Division 6. The team have played well all season with Paul Bumford proving to be the most consistent player.

On the other hand, the ‘B’ team have only really discovered their form toward the latter part of the season, which has seen them moving away from the bottom of the table in a bid for league respectability. Mick Jones has again been the top player, being well supported by David Turner.

CONTACT: Christmas 1978

 

 

The 1978/79 season began during the first week of October with the Bank entering two teams in Division 6 of the Birmingham League.

The ‘A’ team struggled to field their strongest team in the first two weeks of the season, resulting in two heavy defeats. Since this early setback they have only dropped one point, to Westminster ‘B’, having given them a three games start by only fielding a three man team. Nevertheless the ‘A’ team  managed to snatch a draw to help their climb up the table. Ideally, the ‘A’ team would like to improve by at least one position on last years’ effort, finishing third in the league after narrowly losing 4-6 to our main opponents, Kingshurst & North Solihull, in the last match of the season when a draw would have guaranteed the runners-up spot. (A fact that was not known untilafter the match)

The ‘B’ team seem to be doing rather better than last year, having gathered five points from their first eight fixtures, compared to eight points during the whole of last season. Last year their confidence deserted them after a miserable start to the season, yet this year they have carried on without losing their spirit.

In the T.S. Callaghan Cup, the ‘A’ team have won their two matches to date. The Bank team have started from scratch in both games, giving first Rank Xerox six games start and then Blue Circle ten games start. Considering that there are only sixteen matches played in cup matches, all singles, the ‘A’ team have done remarkably well to overcome these odds.

The National T.S.B. competition, for the J.W. Hoccom Challenge Trophy, was won for the second year running by South East T.S.B.

The final was played at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on Sunday, November 19th between the South East & South West T.S.B.s. South East rarely looked to be in trouble against a South West team who tried hard but could not match the varied styles and greater ability of South East, who ran out 8-2 winners.

Mr. Hoccom presented the trophy personally and recalled how the competition itself had grown in stature and popularity during the three years since its inception. The Bank’s teams were eliminated in earlier rounds of the competition. The ‘B’ team were unlucky in drawing the 1977 winners, South East, in the first round and the opposition proved far too strong, with South East winning easily 10-0.

The ‘A’ team defeated the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams from T.S.B. Computer Services, Altrincham to reach the Quarter-Final stages, where they were due to meet Yorks. & Lincs. T.S.B. ‘A’, the 1976 winners. Unfortunately, the ‘A’ team had to scratch from the competition as they were unable to play on the date arranged.

The section is searching desperately for new players who are keen to represent the Bank at table tennis. Home match nights are on a Monday at St. Peter’s Church, Spring Hill at 7.30p.m. If anyone is at all interested then please do not hesitate to contact me at Halesowen Branch for further details.
